   The Instruction of Non-Soviet Writers at the Gorky Literary Institute: Gaoussou Diawara and Malian Literature (In The Soviet Cosmopolis: A Project of World Literature and its Global Impact)

   The Gorky Literary Institute has been in operation since 1933, constantly swelling the ranks of writers, trained in the spirit of Marxist-Leninist theory and literary criticism. Oftentimes the Institute is viewed as a place which generated Russian-language Socialist Realist literature. In fact, it attracted many aspiring writers whose native language was not Russian, as well as non-Soviet novice writers from the allied countries. The African independent movements of the 1960s resulted in the admissions to the Institute of writers from West and North Africa. By analyzing archival materials of the Institute and the published works of the Malian poet and playwright Gaoussou Diawara, this chapter examines how the mixture of different cultures, languages, and literary traditions influenced the teaching practices of writing craft, and how these cultural transfers contributed to the building of the professional habitus of the Literary Institute’s African graduates. The chapter demonstrates that while the Soviet official press presented African graduates of the Institute as loyal communists and adherents of Socialist Realist aesthetics, their actual literary production was more diverse in form and content.

   В статье рассматривается преподавание античной литературы и поэтической техники в Высшем литературно-художественном институте им. В.Я. Брюсова (ВЛХИ). Идея Брюсова о том, что литературному мастерству необходимо учиться, перекликается с подходом к созданию литературы в античном мире. В частности, Брюсов опирается на древнегреческое понятие technē, переводящееся как «искусство» или как «ремесло». Автор показывает, как это и другие понятия античной литературы повлияли на практику преподавания литературного мастерства в ВЛХИ.
